Frequently Asked Questions

What ages is How to Stay Sane in this Crazy World best for?

Ages 12–18 is the sweet spot—teens navigating social media chaos, bullying, or those "who am I?" moments will feel seen and empowered. But it's not just for kids; parents and teachers love it too as a conversation starter and a reminder for them too to look after themselves in this crazy world. I wrote it for the teen I was—lost in darkness—and the one I wish I'd been: equipped with tools and brain hacks to thrive. I would recommend reading it along with your tween or younger teen and picking one topic at a time to focus on as there can is a lot of information in the book.

How does How to Stay Sane help teens with anxiety and depression?

BIt dives into real-world tools like sleep routines to help you maintain a good amount of sleep each day, nature walks to quiet worry voices, and emotion naming (e.g., "overwhelmed" or "rejection") to make big feelings feel manageable. Backed by science (like Harvard's happiness studies), it shows how daily habits reduce stress by 30–50% (WHO). Here’s a 5-star review: "Great gift for my teen. I am a therapist and very impressed with this book. I read it through and shared it with another therapist friend. We both agree it’s great and very well pitched especially for teens. Highly recommend."

What's the difference between How to Stay Sane and other teen self-help books?

Most books lecture or overwhelm with too much science. This one has easy bite-sized bits of information that can flip through born from my own anxiety and therapy journey—covering everything from social media detoxes to embracing struggles, with quick wins like "chop it up" to help make making changes easier. A few paragraphs from the review from The Sapling – “Drawing from her own experience of feeling lost, isolated, and unwell, Lipp shares a range of strategies and suggestions that she found helped her most when she needed it. Because of this—and part of the appeal of this book—Lipp doesn’t write as an expert with all the answers, but as a fellow traveller, walking alongside you on your journey to wellness. Her writing is conversational and affirming. She is open about her own experiences and never assumes that what worked for her will work for everyone else. In fact, one of the strongest ideas woven through the book is the importance of being curious about your own thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and needs, and then using what you learn about yourself to work out what’s genuinely useful for you. Lipp reminds us that every person is different, and that our strategies for wellbeing will reflect that. … That said, the point of this book is not to try to be a clinical or academic resource. What it offers instead is a space to notice, reflect, connect with self, and experiment. Lipp’s focus is on making wellbeing feel accessible—something we can all engage with in our own way, without needing to be experts. It’s a book that meets readers where they are. It reminds us that small, intentional acts of care make a difference, and that we can all find things that work for us to keep us feeling steady, connected, and well.”

Are there tips for parents or is it just for teens?

It's teen-focused really this book is for parents and teachers too. Everything in the book still applies to us ‘grown-ups’ and when we get stressed or anxious, the same tools can help us get back on track. When I was writing the book I realised that there were areas where I was neglecting and it helped to remind me of them and make changes.

How can teens use How to Stay Sane daily for better mental health?

Start with one chapter a week: try the "focus on the good" practice (boosts happiness 10–35%, per studies) or "expand your circle" for getting out into the world and forming real-life connections and community. Build routines like the sleep routine with a no-screen wind-downs or joy adds (e.g., laughter playlists). Over time, it builds a healthy connection with ones self about what works to make you feel happier. Research shows consistent EI tools like these cut teen anxiety risks by 30–50% (WHO & Harvard). One page a day = a saner tomorrow. Another 5-star review, “I bought this for my 12-year-old daughter and she’s loving it and recommending it to her friends and older siblings 😊 We discuss what she’s reading and I really appreciate the practical exercises and tools she can implement daily. There’s no pressure to be setting big goals or making yourself into something great as we’ve found from other journals. It’s all about learning about yourself and how to keep your whole self healthy.”

Unfortunately, the number of people with anxiety and depression is on an alarming upward trend.

Is it just me or does the world seem totally crazy? And how can we stay sane
with so much going on?

This book has been created for teenagers and adults with bite-sized bits of information that are easy to digest for you to use to help you live your best life. They are tools I have personally used to help me out of (and stay out of) a very dark space. I hope they enable you to tackle life’s up and downs and will be of help to everyone, even those not struggling right in this moment. I suggest the adults read the book as well, to help especially the younger tweens and teens, with the content. I would pick one or two topics and try and focus on them before moving on to the next.

Let’s investigate how we can create a future that we are excited about – something we can work towards, something filled with more hope and less fear.

In this book, I offer some ways to make positive change and produce a better outcome for yourself and those around you. These are tools you can fall back on again and again when life gets hard because, let’s face it, life does get challenging from time to time in this crazy, crazy world.

But you can do it!
Let’s get excited and get into it … it’s time to make some changes and start living
your best life!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This book provides us and our teens with the gentle nudge we need to form new habits and rethink what’s contributing to us feeling good, or not-so-much! The author and narrator, Bex Lipp, does this beautifully and so it’s an optimistic, hope-filled book. Bex’s memorable anecdotes and reflections, fun facts and practical advice mean it’s perfectly pitched for our teens and us as their parents. It’s a guide to living our best lives, with Bex cheering us on every step of the way.”
